1690 To The Field And Back - In Picture, Music, Song 1990
ON the morning of 1st July 1690, old calendar,
the armies of two great Kings met in bloody battle
on the banks of the River Boyne near Drogheda.
The conflict between James II and William III of
Orange was only part of a far greater European
power struggle of the time, but the victory of
William that day in the Boyne valley established
a whole new balance of power in international
politics. It also fixed within Ireland a wide range
of perceptions and attitudes whose roots lie deep
in our inherited religious beliefs and loyalties.
Over the intervening years tradition has kept
alive and embellished the folk memories of those
times. Wherever there are Orangemen throughout
the world, the 12th of July is the day of colourful
celebration of William’s victory.
Three hundred years later these folk memories are
as strong as ever, as Orange Lodges throughout Ulster
proudly march with band and banner. The authentic
sights and sounds of this glorious Twelfth are here
captured forever by our film cameras, to bring you to
the best of these celebrations.
Come with us now, in pageant, music and song, as we
march TO THE FIELD AND BACK Running Time 58 mins.
